I've run into these occasionally.  I've heard anecdotes that this type 
of guitar, described as "faux bros", were generally low end instruments 
built to take advantage of the Dobro(tm) popularity of the 30's.

I do know that the name "Beltone" comes up from time to time in string 
instruments of the 30's-60's.  I'm guessing that several manufactures 
have used the name over the years.
