Asian resos tend to have a soundwell either off center or the lip is too far
under the top. I found a solution which seems to work for me.
go to a craft store & buy a embrorary hoop (they come is many sizes, but 10 inch is good,) take it apart & use outside hoop, remove hardware & you should only have to cut a small bit off to fit inside the soundwell. Glue it inside the soundwell flush with the top (of the soundwell) & sand where it is too thick. I tried this on a Johnson while installing a Quarterman cone & it made it sound better than my Dean (with Quartman) & my 76 Dobro (louder & very clear & sweet)
Bob
Larue,
In addition to Quarterman, I put in a bone nut & Ebony tipped bridge.(on the Johnson). (I too routed out the holes toward the neck in the sound
well & it seems a little louder).
I've tried different strings on my Johnson & DS60 Dobro. Beards, SIT reso DBR1756PS (nickel wound), but I always go bake to D'Addario Phor-bronze (mediums) I put the .17 on as first string & a .18 for second.
I think they have better tone & more volume, but that's just the beholder.
