Apologies for writing mainly about a non-reso subject, but at least it's to
do with a similar instrument.
My local music store has currently got a collection of 1950s and 1960s lap
steels in stock, one of which is a 1962 Fender 6-string, fitted with a
Stringtone key changer by Rowe Industrial Products of Toledo, Ohio.
Basically, this little baby allows retuning from open E to C# tuning just by
moving a lever. It seems to be out of production, but does anyone know where
such a thing might be obtained now? The only ones I've seen on eBay have
been fitted to lap steels, and I have a feeling my wife will object to
another guitar in the house (don't know why!) but I might be able to smuggle
this gizmo unnoticed through the back door to retrofit to an existing lap
steel.
Reso content: since the last tailpiece snapped some months ago, I've been
tuning the bottom 2 strings down to D and G (from G and B) which puts less
tension on the reso, and makes for quite a nice sound. Does anyone else use
this tuning?
