Well, we lost Josh Graves a short while ago, but there are two young Joshes that
I'm pretty sure would win Uncle Josh's stamp of approval. A bit o' Googlin'
discloses the following:
Josh Matheny, originally from Lawrence, Kansas, has played with Ashley Ray and
apparently now plays dobro and lap steel with a sort of alt-country band called
Kingbilly. I've tried to look at their MySpace page, but my computer can't
decipher it. Last I had heard about Josh, I think he was studying music at
Belmont in Nashville. I saw him play with Alecia Nugent at an IBMA showcase a
couple of years back, but haven't heard anything about him since. Can anybody
fill us in with more details?
A few weeks ago, I mentioned that Josh Swift was one of the dobroists onstage
during the Uncle Josh tribute at IBMA. Well, I can report now that he's the
dobro picker for Carrie Hassler and Hard Rain. I got a copy of their CD
recently, and as expected, he's a talented, contemporary stylist very
reminiscent of Rob Ickes. The following is cribbed directly from Carrie's web
site:
"Josh Swift was born on September 25 1986 to Randy and Rhonda Swift [SNIP] At
the age of 15, Josh was playing drums on an album and was introduced for the
first time to a Dobro. A local Ohio Dobro/Steel player named Dave Morrison
gave Josh his first taste of the Instrument. Josh was lucky enough to receive
his first Dobro at the age of 16 free of charge, compliments of Gibson. A few
years later, He was introduced to a hometown mountain gospel group called Set
Apart. With Set Apart, he played at many well known bluegrass venues (Bean
Blossom, IBMA, etc.). Josh traveled with Set Apart for just over a year
[SNIP] He has also started recording various albums with Kentucky Thunder
(Ricky Skaggs Band) [SNIP] He resides in Sparta Tennessee on his family farm.
He is currently enrolled at Tennessee Tech University pursuing a business
degree." [FROM CARRIE HASSLER WEB SITE]
In other news, the debut CD ("Fork in the Road") for the Infamous Stringdusters
(featuring one of my favorite dobroists, Andy Hall) is scheduled for release on
Sugar Hill this coming February. Wonder if that's a tuning fork? Anyway, at IBMA
I picked upa copy of their 5-song sampler featuring songs from the forthcoming
CD, and I can report that you'll all want a copy. The new CD is being produced
by Tim Stafford (whose biography of Tony Rice, co-written with Caroline Wright,
is also due out next year).
And the Stringdusters will be at the Argyle Bluegrass Festival here in Texas
next spring (Saturday, March 3, 2:45 PM, one set only). Woo hoo! I hope they
get Andy to do a workshop.
And that's all the news from Lake Wobegon. Conically yours,
Ken Brown
