Hello John;
I am new to Dobro playing as well. I would definitely recommend Jimmy
Heffernan's, "Resophonic Guitar from Scratch", as well as the "You Can Teach
Yourself Dobro" by Mel Bay; featuring Janet Davis. Jimmy's DVD comes with a
companion book with tab & standard notation. The Mel Bay (Janet Davis) lesson can be purchased as just the lesson book; book w/CD; or book w/DVD & CD. I have the lesson book with DVD & CD. Don't let the goofy looking cover of the Mel Bay book throw you off; it is really a good book if
used with the DVD. Between these two, you should have the makings of a good
foundation for a beginner IMHO; and enough material to keep you busy for quite
awhile.
I purchased one of Jim Adams amazing resonator guitars and have just gotten back
into the swing of my lessons again. Had fell off track due to some family
illnesses and a few other personal items.
By the way Jim; thanks for making me such a beautiful looking and wonderful
sounding reso guitar!!! Glad I had the opportunity to correspond with you during
the build.
This list is definitely one of the main reasons I took the plunge and decided to
play resonator guitar. It has put me in contact with many knowledgeable
professional and amateur resophonic guitarists and luthiers alike; all of whom
are very friendly and willing to help anyone with a sincere interest out.
Good luck with the lessons and congrats on the new Reso!

                                                         Mark
