I highly recommend Michael Witcher's instructional book and CD, "Resonator
Guitar", available through Paul Beard's Resophonic Outfitters:
http://www.beardguitars.com/resophonic-cover.html
This book is strong on technique, including lots of roll patterns, scale
patterns in lots of variations (e.g., a G major scale, a G major scale with
hammer-ons and pull-offs, a closed position G scale, a single-string G major
scale, and other practice patterns in various keys and with various right
hand picking patterns); hammer-on and pull-off exercises, string pulls, and
applying the bar to rolls. It also has excellent arrangements of, and tab
for, songs including Cripple Creek, Fireball Mail, Red-Haired Boy,Amazing
Grace, Salt Creek, Maiden's Prayer, Roxanna Waltz, and Cherokee Shuffle. As
far as I'm concerned, one of the most valuable qualities of this set is the
ability to hear the incredibly beautiful tone in Michael's playing on the CD
(with slower and faster practice tracks of everything in the book).
Rob's 2-DVD set is excellent. It hits all the key areas of technique, and
includes a nice section on backing up a vocalist.
I recently watched Orville Johnson's "Tricks, Licks & Techniques for Dobro
Volume 1" from www.LearnRootsMusic.com. It has good coverage of pick
blocking, lots of scale exercises, harmonics, and playing in different keys
without a capo, with Red Haired Boy in A as an example. I think all this
would be useful to a beginner to low-intermediate level player.
As for Phil L.'s tape, it has a great moment in it. Phil is talking about
the need to practice regularly, and he offers this rule of thumb: "Practice
on the days that you eat." Then he adds, "and as you can tell by looking at
me, I practice a lot." If you take that advice to heart, wouldn't that
alone be worth the cost of the tape???
