I had a good talk with Pete back in 1994. To the best of my
recollection, he said he used a plain 18 first, a plain 18 second,
a plain 22 third, a wound 32 fourth and a wound 42 for the fifth
and sixth both. Now, the wound strings *could* have been 34
and 44, but I am certain he said that the fifth and the sixth were
the same gauge. He did not have his Dobro with him (darn it).
I had one of mine & he played it for about 45 minutes or so.
He really liked it. He was puzzled by the cone until I told him it was
one I had "thinned" down to about half its original thickness.
He said he had seen that tried before but it didn't work, but this one
sure did. I had regular gauge Nickel strings on it, tuned in open
"F," which is just "G" two frets lower.
That Dobro never sounded as good as when he played it.
He had "magic fingers."
I still got that set of strings in a drawer in my room.
Good luck,
