Quoting Bill McCloskey <mccloskey@gmail.com>:
"My wife was saying that while she liked the concert, she liked Alyson Krause
better when we saw Jerry with her. [SNIP] According to my wife, women don't like
instrumentals, blistering solos, and extended improvisation. They like short
songs they can sing to."
=> Hmmmmmmmn. I know I'll regret this...
My favorite kind of music involves heartfelt singing. I think that what the
dobro does best (along with the fiddle) is to back up the human voice. There's
nothing I like better than a great vocalist with a great dobro picker behind
her (or him). Which is exactly what you get when you listen to Alison Krauss
(who sometimes performs under the pseudonyms "Alyson Krause" or "Alison
Chains"). A great vocalist and a great dobro picker -- what's not to like?
Personally, I don't care for instrumentals, blistering solos, and extended
improvisation, which is why I studiously avoid jam bands, but if the Jerry
Douglas Band would ever come within a hundred miles of here, I'd certainly show
up. I'd go just for the sheer appreciation of Jerry's alchemy, even if there's
no singing. I don't think there's a strong gender connection.
I might add that I can't sing a lick, myself. Maybe that's why I appreciate
it so much. I also can't play like Jerry, which is why I appreciate him, too.
And my jeans weren't even creased the day I bought 'em.
And then Betty Wheeler <bettywheeler@gmail.com> added:
"I do agree with the last part of what Michael B. said, which is that
musicians... are more likely to enjoy virtuoso instrumental performances without
vocals."
=> Uh-oh, Betty has me nailed. I guess if I were a musican, I'd be into
instrumentals!
I smell trouble coming, so maybe I had better sign this:
