Wintergrass '07 is history.. this year it was an absolute reso
feeding frenzy!
Blue Highway was great... As part of set, Rob Ickes played a long
improvised version
of Old Rugged Cross on stage by himself. It was fantastic...!!
Jerry Douglas did a showcase sponsored by Beard Guitars and he was
amazing! He got Orville Johnson up to play with him and that was well
received. The room was packed.. not an open seat and people standing
along
the wall from the stage to the back and then across the back and down
the
other side to the stage. about 250 folks in attendance.
Valarie Smith and Liberty Pike made a great impact on the audience.
Chad
Graves did a great job playing reso. He says when he introduces himself
the second thing out of his mouth is "no relation." : > ) He was a
cut up and extremely
well dressed in a 1940s Zoot Suit, fedora hat with narrow brim and shoes
that can't even be described... except to say that if Boa
Constrictors had feet,
that's what they'd wear for shoes.
Andy Hall and the Infamous Stringdusters were hot... great audience
response... Andy and Chad conducted the Advanced Reso workshop which
followed Jerry's showcase...and then Chad stayed and joined us for
Resomania!!
which was a blast.. Let's see, the usual suspects and some other
miscreants showed
up...
Orville Johnson & Rayco, Tab Tabscott & DeNeve, Greg Maas & 'horn,
Marty Lepore & 8 string Dobro in G6, Mike Grigoni, Todd Singleton
& Rayco,
Dan Tyack & Beard MA 6, Chad Graves & Rayco, yours truly & DeNeve,
Al Brinkerhoiff & 'horn, and, let's see... what was that guy's name?
oh, yeah.... Jerry Douglas & Beard
Jerry had a good time and so did we...
Marty played a Swingy version of Remington Ride, so I sneaked my
low D up to E and Swung along with him and the gang.. raising that
string
is a neat trick... it fills out the sound and drives the notes
closer together.
We played about and hour and then hung out with audience members
pickers, tirekickers, wannabes, etc.. there was a lot of interest in
reso.
I got the guys to play Sweet Georgia Brown and that was a great fun...
and speaking of which---
an aside: early Thursday morning, a Seattle TV station was there
filming Valarie Smith and Liberty Pike as a promo for the local news.
While the band was waiting, the Harlem Globtrotters poured out of the
elevators and started moving through the lobby toward the two huge
busses they had parked out front... as they went by toward the
front doors, the band immediately launched into a swingy version of
Sweet Georgia Brown... the report I got of this event said it was
pretty funny.
While Wintergrass didn't declare this year to be the year of the reso,
the theme -- New Sounds in Bluegrass... was tilted pretty heavily in
that direction..
It was wall-to-wall reso for Friday.. that was probably driven by
Jerry's
schedule.. he and his band took off Friday night at midnight and
drove to Boise, ID for a gig that Sat night... however, there was
plenty of reso left over for Sat and Sunday.. Blue HIghway played
again Sunday afternoon at 3:00 pm.
I'm still blitzed by the all the reso vibes... there were a lot of reso
players in jams...and a significant number of resos on stage this
year.
Tom, plumb wore out from having too much fun...
