I used to go lighter, but I love the heavier strings, especially the low ones
which otherwise go sharp with bar pressure. I use John Pearse strings like this:

They are tight enough that they tune down to C just fine and are growly down
there. I often keep one of my National Model D guitars down to C.
I use my eight string the most, though, tuned in D add 9.
