I have had a much bigger problem with unwound, 1st and 2nd strings feeling and
sounding rough under the bar.
Years ago I used ordinary Gibson strings and never had a problem. They were
like glass. Then, on the advice of friend, a well-known, extremely good Dobro
player, I bought some Euphonon strings. These were even shipped uncoiled, in a
plastic tube. The unwound strings were so rough I took them off and put my old
strings back on.
Since then, most of the unwound strings I buy, and I obviously can't try every
brand, have some degree of roughness by comparison. Beard strings are very good,
although not as absolutely slick as the old Gibson stings.
My remedy now is to polish them with Crocus Cloth and apply a coating of
Fast-Fret, which I then wipe off. I don't put it on the wound strings.
BTW, Crocus Cloth is a material coated with iron oxide, like early magnetic
recording tape, intended to polish metal but not materially remove any of it.
I usually don't play as hard as most people, especialy those who are trying to
be heard over a band, and strings last a long time. The initial brilliance of
wound strings disappears quickly, then they seem to stabilize.
Over a long period of use, I think strings may stretch unevenly, more here and
less there, which will throw the intonation off. This is probably more noticable
on a fretted instrument, where it is impossible to compensate as with a bar.
