Hey Dick,
I think the Planet Waves tuners I've got on "Blackie" set me back around $40
bucks. The thing I don't care for is they are BLACK....and on "Blackie's peg
head....well it's DARK in there!!! I completely agree with you on anything
heavier than the 4th string having excessive turns around the post. That "fancy
schmantzy" Planet Waves knurled CLAMP thingy, works really great, (as does the
"Martin knot.") For those who read this that aren't familiar with the
tuners I currently have on "Blackie", you loosen this knurled knob on the bottom
of the tuner, that has a shaft that runs up thru the tuning machine's shaft, you
slip the string thru the hole, you tighten the knurled knob and actually lock the
string in the tuner's shaft, and then when you start to tune to pitch, there's a
tiny cutter that trims the string for you.
ANYTHING is easier (and cheaper), and quicker than changing strings on a PSG
tho......first of all, my Emmons had TWENTY strings.....so I'm ahead of the game,
right there, O;-)
