I've changed an awful lot of strings (not nearly as many as Dick though). I'm
sure Dick's method work's well, but seems like extra steps to me based on the
fact that the the method I use has been great for me.
I insert the string to the tailpiece and bring it past the tuning peg. I then
cut the string one tuning peg past the peg it needs to be attached to (for the
3rd and 4th strings estimate where the next peg would be). Then using my wire
cutters, I bend the end of the string to a 90 degree angle. Just enough string
past the bend to go through the tuner and stick out just a little. I then wind to
pitch - and am there. The string winds below the end of the strings protuding
fron the tuner hole. I've never had any problems with slippage. The wounds
strings end up wrapping 2 times around the peg (a little more for thinner
strings, a little less for thicker). But for the unwound strings, I tend to make
the cut a little longer so there's a bit extra wrap since their is no wound part
of the string to grab on the tuner.
I've spoken to a number of folks that change strings the same way,
