When I had a slot-head guitar, I'd cut the strings to about 2.5 to 3
inches long before stringing per the Beard video...that seemed to work
pretty well.
Now, with solid-head guitars, I just wrap one to two turns around the
post while pulling fairly tight...then when I wind the string up to
pitch I've got two-four turns on the post. Depends on which
string...the skinnier the core/string, the more initial winds. I do
something like 1 wind on strings 6&5, 1.5 winds on 4&2, and 2 winds on
3&1. Usually.
