John Pearse told me that cutting a wound string can sometimes encourage it to
unravel and lose its stringlike qualities. He suggested giving the string a
couple of strong bends before cutting a wound string, but is far more in favor
of cutting the wound string after it is on the instrument.

I know that many or most call it that, but it's really a coverplate strap that
protects the bridge.
