Hi list,
I’m thinking about purchasing a lap steel guitar. I recently discovered a
guy who lives on the other side of town who builds them, wooden models,
‘frying pans’ everything. They are completely handmade incl. the pickups.
They look great and they aren’t expensive. He plays Hawaiïan music and his
instruments have that sweet pedal steel sound that you want when you play
Hawaiïan or country music.
Thing is…I’m more interested in the sound that Jerry Douglas gets when he
plays lap steel, kinda like an electric guitar, a bit distorted, sharper…
I don’t know much about electric instruments. What makes lap steels sound
so different? Is it the material (wood/metal), the pick ups, how they are
amplified or do I have to look for a specific brands or models?
Regards,
Pieter
