Amen to the F-Holes and no screen rings!! It's not just subjective. Not
having the screens DOES "open up" the sound and give more volume. I sat in
on a Rob Ickes workshop last year and he was discussing just that. He and
Tim Sheerhorn had done measured tests with and without the screens.
Measurable volume increase without the screens. As for the "open sound" I
guess that would be a subjective thing and probably can't be measured.
After that workshop I went and took the screens out of my RD-45 and got just
that result. i. e. more volume. I couldn't be happier with the results.
As far as the F-holes I love the look. And when picking that dream guitar
don't forget the coverplate. There are many more choices out there other
than the plain old fan plate. I lean to the "Tut Taylor" Lyre pattern and
have converted both my guitars. Same result by the way. More volume and a
more open tone. YRMV
Now if I could just learn to play the dern things!!
