Hey Bill,
This is an interesting dilemma. Being a newbie to the bluegrass scene,
I didn't at first realize nor suspect the bias some bluegrassers have
against amplification or electrification of any kind. After a few
months, let's just say that now I know better.
Jam ettiquette is a bit different in the jazz scene, which I am more
familiar with (as i used to be an amature jazz guitarist and pianist
for many years prior to taking up the dobro last year), but there is
one similarity: in both scenes, you still occasionally run into the
big, overdomineering personas, the kind who like to think they're
"running the show." It's unfortunate. All ego, no substance. I actually
think it's kind of a guy thing (not that other genders are exempt from
it, but that certain kinds of men seem particularly prone to liking to
think they are in charge). It's an immature attitude, that's for sure.
Afterall, how can someone not like the road-o-phonic?! That's bad taste
right there if I ever heard it!
In any case, your "who cares" approach seems like the right way to go
to me, but if anybody gives you any trouble or says anything further,
well, if I were you I'd try to talk it out politely with them. Let your
view be heard. Jams are political, eh. Even back in ancient Greece, I
bet the musicians had the same problems.
The thing is, you don't attend to please that one guy, right; rather,
you go because you want to play good music with good people. Maybe he's
just not good people (even if he is a good picker).
That's my 2 cents.
Best regards and good luck trying to sort this thing out,
David
