You know there may have been an attempt at a third scam. Right after
I started playing, (that would be 1999/2000) I would scan eBay for
Dobros (a process I had to stop after I picked up 4 instruments).
There was a guy that would post a listing from time to time who
claimed to be a luthier, who had become intrigued by eBay and was
trying to expand into the eBay world. He claimed to have developed a
low-priced instrument, presumably low-priced compared to his other
wares, that he would subsequently build for the winning bidder. That
sound just like Ray's MO.
The "low" price was a bit too steep for me (something like an $800
starting bid), especially considering I'd never heard of the guy. And
while I don't exactly remember the name, I do remember the pun,
thinking "who would want a Bozo Dobro?" The listing showed a very
pretty guitar; given that some of Ray's guitars were photoshopped
pictures of guitars made by other builders, I wonder who made that
one. I remember this showed up at least twice with a picture of the
same guitar, but I'm not sure if anyone got bit by it. Sadly I'm
pretty sure that no record of that will exist today.

P.S. Didn't Leo Kottke used to endorse a Bozo guitar?
