In my experience the amps that a Dobro sounds good through will also sound good
with a lap Steel connected. However the opposite is not always true; so bring
your Dobro too when you go shopping!
OK; I can think of 3+ routes to go:
* DI, Pod, or external preamp
* small amp mic'd
* larger amp for when the PA is limited to the vocals
+ amp with an integrated balanced line out (XLR)
The DI means you have to rely on the monitors to hear yourself.
A small to mid-sized amp mic'd is my choice for lap steel. Use one amp that you
like a lot for practice and on stage. This type of amp with a balanced line out
(XLR) built in can be a good compromise. Mic the amp when you are on stage and
use it for personal monitor. I have a Peavey Session 500 (a mid-size amp) which
has both a XLR output and post-gain. "Post-gain" sets the input level to the
power-amp stage.
Unless you guys rehearse with your own PA (without someone running the board) at
Club levels a Large-amp is bulky and is overkill for playing lap steel in small
clubs.
I think that lap steel and Resonator guitar sounds fine through many smaller
amps. I used to play lap steel through a Fender Showman amp (only 60 watts)
connected to a 2x12 cabinet (this was overkill).
I have a Fender Champion 110 which I have NEVER been satisfied with; stay away
from these amps.
