There is no doubt that Gene had the right moniker when someone called
him the "Sultan of Slants" there will more than likely never be
another that had the neck of a dobro mastered as did Gene. Those who
know me are aware that I do not play the instrument but I am a
serious fan of the instrument. For many who may not know this, just
before Genes passing (he was very frail at the time) Frank Harlow had
sat down with Gene and they did an instructional video which was
never released due to Genes passing, the tape was made on 9/18/01 and
Gene passed away on 11/09/01. I considered Gene a dear friend and
spent many memorable minutes with him in my motorhome, exchanging
tech talk about dobros whenever we would see him at a festival. He
played practically all of my collection of 16 dobros at one time or
another and set up one of my pre-war instruments. I was very
fortunate to acquire one of these tapes and Gene explains and
demonstrates in detail his method of playing slants, palm harmonics,
string pulls etc. on about 10-12 tunes, the entire tape runs just
over an hour and is raw material not edited. I will not make copies
of this tape for distribution to anyone, however I will play it for
anyone who would like to view it anytime I have it with me, and a
tape player is available. I will be attending the Gathering of
Resonatures in Wilkesboro, NC from July 12th-14th and will make sure
to bring this tape with me and play it for all to watch as a kind of
workshop, I hope that will help. I will also be at Thomas Point
Bluegrass Festival in Maine over the Labor Day and anyone who may be
there and would like to view the tape can find me and Bobby Wolfe in
the pine grove near the bathhouse look for a Pace Arrow m/h with
maroon awnings, and PA tags.
