Subject:[RESOGUIT-L] RE: Gene Wooten

From:Randolph E. Getz <bgdobro @...net>

Dave Gleason asks about Gene Wooten: Who was Gene and what bands did
he play for?

Gene won the 1979 HOUN'DOG contest run by Beverly Kings' periodical
"Resophonic Echoes" at the time which later became "Country Heritage"
and is now defunct, she was forbidden to use the word Dobro hence
Houn'dog which was a moniker placed on Dobro guitars in the late
60's. Gene had worked with several regional bands in the NC/ VA area.
He joined Wilma Lee Cooper in the late 70's and worked with her for
several years into the 80's, he appeared on several of her recordings
during this period and they are for the most part Out of Print except
for reissues on c/d. He also worked with Country Gazette from the mid
80's for several years joining the Osborne Brothers in the early
90's. There are numerous Osborne brothers recordings on which Gene
appears as well as a video recorded at Renfro Valley of a live
Osborne Brothers performance. Gene was in high demand as a sessions
player and backed many others during the 90's into the early 2000's,
unfortunately the background players receive little mention and you
would have to know on what projects he appeared. He was thought by
many to be the one to fill the shoes of Josh Graves because of his
style of playing, when Josh's playing days were over, unfortunately
Gene passed on before Josh was ready to quit. Now we have neither
Josh or Gene and there is a huge gap in the traditional bluegrass
style these two embodied. Gene had one project of his own which is
titled "Don't Look Now" and is still available on the Pinecastle
label, this is must listening for any fan of this instrument.
