The other day before the big CRASH Rick Randol posted his Gene Wooten
story and I then posted mine to the list, but because of the problems
it never got there so I will repost.
Rick said there was a knock at the door and there stood Gene, and he
was totally
surprised to see him:
I started my story with that was the type of gentleman this man was
he would never do anything to allow someone to have ill feelings
towards him, I guess you could say that Gene never Got Above His
Raising. We would always have Gene over to our m/h for a meal
whenever the Osborne Brothers were working a festival we happened to
be attending, I enjoyed conversing with him about Dobro technical
matters and he would always play a couple licks on one of my old
Dobros. This particular time as Gene was attempting to put some salad
into his bowl with the salad tongs the tongs broke, Gene was
embarrassed for no good reason and the wife was devastated. We never
saw Gene again that year however at the first festival we saw him at
the following year we invited him over once more. We could look down
the road towards the stage area and saw Gene heading for the m/h and
he was carrying a brown paper bag. When he got to the m/h he handed
the bag to the wife and said "here this is for you", she opened the
bag and lo and behold there was a new pair of salad tongs, today
whenever we use those salad tongs we have fond memories of Gene and
his visits. He had no need to do this but that is the kind of man he
was and we sure do miss him.
