Does anyone remember Deacon Brumfield? He played with Alex and Olabelle and the
New River Gang from the 40's through the 60's. He gathered fame by playing on
their live radio show that was broadcast as part of the 50,000 watt WWVA
Jamboree
from Wheeling W. Va. He is on most of the Gang's records on the New River label
and cut two solo instrumental albums on the Ken-Del label. Deacon was "old
school" with lots of harmonic slides and crying. Some of my favorites are "Steel
Guitar Rag", Sailor on the Deep Blue Sea", "Dobro Jump", and "I'll Be All Smiles
Tonight".
Deacon introduced me to the Dobro and I emulated him at first. Of course when I
first heard Josh, I was an instant convert. He was just so cool!! Looking back,
however, Deacon did some pretty impressive work, and I still enjoy picking some
of his tunes just the way he did. It's a very interesting contrast of two very
different styles...Double-thumbing vs three-finger. I'm probably the only one
left playing "Deacon" style. It's a fun change of pace.
