Hey Guy and Gals ,
Im a first timer, and a newbie to the reso , Ive bought my first instrument
ever last year in Febuary , it was a Regal RD75 i recently traded up to another
regal RD 52 .
Im in a bluegrass band with a few guys who are good at hiding my lack of
ability.
but i have great fun and try to do my best ,and practice still at about 2
hours each day.
So with that out of the way ..I love Josh's recordings with flatt and scruggs
,I just purchased two dvd's of the Flatt and Scruggs Martha White /Pet milk shows
they are awesome!
everyone should check them out .I read just two or three days ago that Josh
actually started with F/S as a bassist then with the help of Earl Scruggs was the
first person to adapt three finger picking to a Dobro with hours of backstage
practice with Earl.It also stated he had a very big blues influence in his
playing that attributed to the "Josh style".Im also a real newbie at playing
music i never have done any before last year and i think its amazing how someone
can go from bassist to developing a completely new style of dobro picking in such
a short time he was truely an amazing musician. I would love any information i
can aquire about ways to learn and become a better musician . so i hope i dont
become bothersome i thank you all in advance ,and appologize for babbleing on
so.
  Ben Wooten.

A timely question as I'm listening to the Sept 2, 1955
(9:30AM-12:30PM) session of Flatt & Scruggs on Bear Family
records. The very first cut is Josh's first track with the
group, the instrumental Randy Lynn Rag.

I'd encourage all interested parties to listen to the (superb)
band pre Josh and note the dynamic changes after he joined.
IMHO, they became the first "modern" bluegrass band.

Josh added an agressiveness to the Dobro(R) that just was not
present until his work with Earl Scruggs.

Notes from the Bear Family set, Flatt & Scruggs 1948-1959 say:

"Within a very short time other bluegrass bands were using the
Dobro(R), showing th extent of Flatt & Scruggs on contemporary
bluegrass. it would be years before anyone came close to
challenging graves as the leading bluegrass Dobro(R) player."

Charlie Nixon replaced Josh after the F&S split...no comparison
(imho).

In addition to the R/L rag mentiond I recall Josh's solo on "On
My Mind", "Joy Bells", "Shuckin' The Corn" (whew), "Don't Let
Your deal Go Down", "A Hundred Years From Now", "Cryin my Heart
Out Over You", "Ground Speed" (double whew), and "Foggy Mt
Rock"...Which brings the group to April 5, 1959...and the next
Bear Family set of F&S... :-)

There is much..much more. I've barely scratched the surface here.

cheers,

h
