I am actually left handed. When I first started playing the
reso, I played it left handed. Actually learned a couple of
tunes (Wabash Cannonball and Great Speckled Bird) before I
switched over to playing right handed. I still write and do
several other things left handed.

As far as the index finger use, I think the index (IMO) is
just as important as my middle finger. When I first started,
I tried to skip around it a little bit, but once I got to
where I could use it correctly it helped to make all the
rolls and licks flow better. I remember a time when I tried
to avoid it, but finally it started working for me. I think
the index finger is always the last finger to really get
solid.

When Matt was first learning, he tried to do everything with
only his thumb and middle. I kept telling him to work on his
index finger, but he would play everything with only two. I
could stand outside his bedroom and hear that he was only
using 2 by the flow of the licks he was playing. One day, I
noticed the licks getting better and really starting to take
off. That was the point he started making the idex work.
Once he did, he realized that I was correct in telling him
that the index finger was very important.

I guess if I ONLY had one digit, it would be my thumb.

If I had to choose between my index and my middle it would
be a toss up. In my opinion they are both equally important.
