Arrghh . . . over the last couple of years I have eliminated the 3rd finger
for most of my playing to improve my tone, because other players whose tone
I also admire specifically recommended I do so. I am so confused . . .
I take solace in something Mike Auldridge said to me a few years ago in a
lesson. Something to the effect that if there is a sound in your head you
are trying to achieve on the dobro, you will eventually get it like you want
it. . . . he also said that that takes time.

<<<Having taken instruction from Johnny, I know that he seldom uses the
index finger and recommends learning the double thumb to improve tone. I
have had limited success with this conversion, but I continue to try.
I hope this is of help to you.
