I have to agree with you, Phil. And by the way, for this former banjo player,
"double thumbing" means a T-I-T-M pattern.
I did notice that after playing mostly dobro trying to play banjo again was
difficult because my index finger had lost its mojo.
I would think that you would want to be able to play either TTM or TIM. The
reason you use 3 fingers is that it takes more time to repeat a finger. So in
really fast situations wouldn't it make more sense to do TIM????

just as important as my middle finger. When I first started,
I tried to skip around it a little bit, but once I got to
where I could use it correctly it helped to make all the
rolls and licks flow better. I remember a time when I tried
to avoid it, but finally it started working for me. I think
the index finger is always the last finger to really get
solid.
