In my experience, two thumbs in a row on adjacent strings (in the direction of
the thumb travel, of course) followed by an index or middle is faster and
punchier than thumb-index-middle. For me, this works well up to a point, and the
point is speed.

Really fast, yes, indeed. The Joe Wright technique that Tim pointed out doesn't
give you much punch on the reso, but is effective when you're playing way above
120 beats per minute, which is to say too damned fast for much in the way of
dynamics or expression -- at least for me and my ear. Pedal steel is a little
more forgiving for that technique, basically because it's an amplified
instrument and you don't have to strike the strings with anything near the
intensity you would on reso.
Incidentally, Paul Franklin does a pretty good job of playing way too damned
fast on "Pick It Apart" on Mark O'Connor's "The New Nashville Cats" recording.
