Well......SOME.......would say "It ain't Bluegrass!" because there's definitely
a lack of banjo in this wonderful cd from Merle Haggard. Frankly, coming from a
background of country western, (back when it WAS really country western, not the
homogenized "crap" I'm hearing today,) I find the lack of the banjo
"jackhammering" every tune into the ground, a blessed relief!
We just had a interesting discussion re: "angry dobros" but to my thinking (in
some cases obviously) this could apply to "angry banjos" as well. In C&W, the same could apply to "lead"
bass players, and "in u'r face" drummers as well. Good taste prevails.......I
believe Mike Auldridge has long ago, proven this beyond all doubt.
Enough ranting.....and apologies in advance, to any who I might have offended.
MERLE HAGGARD "The Bluegrass Sessions" is wonderful! Just a wonderful musical
time, where a group of extremly talented musicians, got together in a room full
of top quality recording equipment operated by other equally talented people who
really knew what they were doing. What a happy result!!!
Rob Ickes holds down the dobro spot, and it's just wonderful. JD Wilkes does a
great job on harmonica, and there's another instrument that isn't considerd
"bluegrass" but wow, does it fit where it's applied on this cd. Again, good
taste prevails! Marty Stuart is on mandolin, Carl Jackson is credited with
guitar/harmony vocals, Ben Isaacs is on upright bass, Aubrey Haynie shares fiddle
with Scott Joss, and Alison Krauss does vocals on Mama's Hungry Eyes, but again,
it's "Hag's" cd and you hardly know she's there.
This will hold "the favorite spot" in here for quite some time.
It's also a fun cd to "twang" along with,
Richie
