The end of an era, indeed. Earlier this year, Jerry D spoke at some length
at his Wintergrass workshop about the enormous contributions Tim Scheerhorn
has made to the instrument's design and sound, and then he went on to speak
at length about Paul Beard's contributions. At IBMA last week, Rob's
speech presenting the distinguished achievement award to Mike Auldridge, and
Mike's acceptance speech, both focused on the importance to Mike of his
collaboration with Paul to develop his signature model, and Rob's speech
accepting his Dobro Player of the Year award described the importance of
Tim's work for Rob and his playing.
For the dobro, much more so than for other instruments, key luthiers and
their innovations have played an integral role in the evolution of the music
itself in recent years (the last 10-15 years especially), and we've all been
fortunate to be eyewitnesses to and beneficiaries of that rapid evolution.
On the foreign competition notion, the high-quality foreign-made instruments
are designed by either Tim or Paul, and in terms of market share, are
positioned to be (and based on sales and waiting lists, are in fact)
complementary to the higher-end custom instruments. I don't think they're
displacing sales of the high-end custom instruments. But it is great to
have some high-quality affordable options out there, and kudos to both Paul
and Tim for that, as well.
