this brings to mind the "violin" argument.. i.e., you want your
kid to learn to love the violin, so do
you buy her a good one, or torture her with a cheapie that will
surely discourage her from playing?

because of Tim and Paul's design specs and long experience the
the W-S and Goldtone
are amazing guitars for the money. And yes, they do fill the
niche for a quality, reasonably priced
instrument that won't discourage anyone who really wants to get
started on reso. I think it was
a stroke of genius on both their parts to offer good entry
level instruments which will get new
players going... and eventually they'll stumble over other
makers' instruments and move up to
a hand crafted guitar. Beard has a deal (last I heard it was
still in force) where he will take
back the Goldtone in trade for a higher end guitar as long you
didn't back your pickup over
it. Interestingly enough, Chet told me a couple years ago
that at that time, no one had taken
Paul up on that deal because most people who bought a Goldtone
and then chose to move
up to an E body, or MA signature guitar decided to keep the
Goldtone... makes sense,
if your girlfriend gets mad at you and throws the canoe paddles
in the water, you'd rather
be paddling the canoe with the Goldtone to get back into
shore... Okay, that's lame, and
probably would only be a concern for Richie... : > )

Anon E. Moose, somewhere in the wonderfully rainy and cold NW
while the rest of the
                                      country wishes the hot weather
would go away...
