I've used a couple of Audio Technica mikes that to my ears are smoother
than SM57z. As Howard notes the Beta 57 is superior to the orginal 57
(or 58), but they are a lot pricer than the ATs. One I use a lot is the
ATM63, which is discontinued but there is a current version. I also
like the also discontinued ATM41As better than 58s for vocals.
Of course, if you can move to a condenser mike there are now a lot of
reasonable choices (carry a power supply is you are dealing with a
variety of sound boards (particularly older ones that don't have phantom
power.
