Elixir strings are a good option if you aren't gigging. I use them on my
guitar because it only gets occasional use, but they don't sound as good as
brand new phosphor bronze strings that's for sure. So I'll put ordinary
strings on if i'm gigging in singer/songwriter mode.
I always use ordinary strings on my two dobros, I live with the crappy sound
on my practice instrument as the strings age, it's just too expensive to
replace them every two days if I'm practicing heavily. It's a trade-off of
course, especially when you are starting out it's important that you get
entranced with the sound of the instrument and crummy strings won't help
that process...
