You could do a LOT worse than the SM57. It's been an industry standard
for decades for many uses, not the least of which is resonator guitar,
mandolin, etc. Treat it right and you never need to buy another mic.
It's one of my "desert island" mics.
Having said that, there are a fair number of mixers (their preamps
actually) that do not play nice with this mic (specifically the Mackie
CM (?) boards that nearly everyone seems to have). Also know that the
frequency response of an SM57 (which its great big "presence peak" at
about 4-5 hHz) can make some instruments sound terrible.
The Beta 57 is somewhat less prone to this, and a bit smoother all
around. I also like the Sennheiser E609 for dobro, but not so much for
other things.
I have been using a Shure KSM137 for about 2 years now , for dobro,
mandolin and guitar, and could not be happier. It does require phantom
power.
