I'm not Andy, but I do have a Zoom H4 (last year's version). It records as mp3
or wav files (depending how you set it) on a SD (secure digital) card. If your
computer has a slot for these (lots of laptops do) you just plug and play. You
can get card readers cheap - just plug into a USB port. The Zoom also comes with
a USB cable so you can plug it in directly. No software needed. You DO need
software if you plan on recording multiple tracks and editing/combining them.
Don't know about the Edirol. Several folks on the ResoNation have Zooms (H2
and H4) and have commented favorably. My H4 is small, simple to use, and with a
2gb card, I think I could record the entire ResoSummit, including my snoring. ;~)
Uses AA batteries (or plug in charger) which only record a couple of hours, if I
recall.
Very nice toy. The H4 only records 2 channels. I think the H2 will do 4,
right? And I bet if you look around a bit (ebay?) you can probably get one for
less than $199.

Andy, can the H2 download to computer w/out special software?
Have you used/seen both? which did you like the best? If I recall
the Edirol is twice the $ as the H2.
