From:George Rout <georout @......ca>

Ah Richie, thank you for your note but alas, I'm lightyears 'head of ya (I'm
not being funny), I have a Dobro, first had a very nice Japanese made
Alcivar and I've been playing it for twenty or so years. When Tom Foote
chimed in on the thread I submitted about my buddy's prewar Regal built
Dobro, I think you were in there also. I have submitted a copy of our Peach
Pickers first CD with me on Dobro to RESORADIO, ALLRESORADIO THAT IS!!! I
would have probably kept the Alcivar, albeit being a round neck, I loved the
tone, but peer pressure was always asking about "you playing a round neck",
and, "is that a real Dobro"???? All my life, and I"m 70, I've played with
a round bar on the lap steel (don't play PSG), but again, peer pressure was
always challenging me about a "bullet" bar as opposed to a Stevens style, so
I went that route and a bit more, and I like the Shubb-Pearse SB2 because
it's heavier.

However, all that being said, I would prefer (but don't) to use the bullet
bar both on the Dobro and lap. Mind you, my style is not the aggressive
Jerry Douglas style, I consider the old style to be "sweeter", more haunting
then Jerry's "bullets of sound", his 1/32 notes, and as he says, "He leaves
no void in the music". That's very nice, but I don't like it, so I'm happy
with my round bar and my "haunting" sound. To me, the Hawaiian style
playing has that big advantage over ALL other string instruments, and that
is the "haunting sound of the slide". Sorry about that Jerry, but I know
you have many fans, you don't need me!!!!!

I never considered anything but the G tuning, although I've taken note of
different tunings over the years. On my lap steel interest, I have
experimented with other tunings, but for some reason or another, I don't
even use a capo on the Dobro, although I've had one since Pontious was a
pilot, in fact, I think he was just an air cadet!!!!

Among my collection of 9,000 LP's I have a great collection of Dobro music,
and yes, while it's not autographed, I have most of, if not all, Mike A's
vinyl output including "Eight String Swing", in fact I think I even have a
duplicate in error.

And with that, I'm going horizontal and get an extra hour of sleep!!!
Those poor folks in farming country like Saskatchewan don't gain an hour of
sleep!!!!!

Thanks again. Keep up the good work and interest guys.

Thank you Richie.

George
