Subject:Re: [RESOGUIT-L] Tunings and re-tuning

Well Adriel,

It depends on what kind of music you are playing I guess,? You certainly don't
want that "cooler" sound in the usual bluegrass tune now, do you? However if
it's a tune like "Lovesick Blues" that our lady bass-gal does from time to time,
I may play it "regular", or.....I may decide while the ojnab or the mando are
doing their "thing," to raise that fourth string quickly from D up to E for that
G6th "cooler" sound for my second break. Depends on circumstances....the "whim
of the moment" you might say. No big thing, I just kinda wander towards the back
of the stage and "do it".

None of my Sho-Bros, with their old fashioned larger solid peg heads will
tolerate this, however. They'll snap that 4th string more often than not, if
they get half a chance. The way their peg heads are made, the strings leave the
nut at a greater angle, towards the tuning machines, than on the newer styled
DeNeve. The DeNeve also enjoys Dick's unique inner bracing system....I dunno
why.....but "Blackie" DeNeve just TOLERATES whatever I tell her to do. "Blackie"
will crank that fourth string up and down all day if I ask her to. And cheapo
me, uses the same guage strings on all my guitars. I have in my little
"collection", those that I consider "working" guitars....ones that I take on
gigs.....two sq. neck Sho-Bros, my wonderful black DeNeve, and lately I've been
trusting myself to *think* about taking "Dolly" my '75 OMI 8 string, and the only
"real" Dobro I own out. One of my New Years resolutions (remember them?)
was to try and get "Dolly" out of the house more often. You
'd LOVE "Dolly", Adriel. I keep her tuned regular G6th. with the 4th and 8th
strings tuned E. This from lo to hi comes EGBDEGBD. Hit those E strings at the
wrong time, and you're playing with Bob Wills.......ahhhhh hawwwwww!!!

Twangs,

Richie
