Subject:Re: [RESOGUIT-L] Tunings and re-tuning
Date:Sunday, November 4, 2007  10:51:28 (-0500)
From:D. Tannehill <ephsmath-phys @...net>

Much agreed. For me there are 3 tunes I use it for. Wayfaring Stranger,
which we do in E minor, I like having the minor chords on strings 4, 3 and
2, and then major chords for the bridge on strings 3, 2, &1. Strings 6, 5, 3
& 2 work for both major and minor. We also do a Bluegrass version of a
Western Swing number "Nails in My Coffin. That 6th tuning really opens up a
whole other dimension. Then we have another C&W song weve bluegrassed a bit.
Seminole wind has both major and minr chords throughout.

For most of the straight Bluegrass, G tuning is what works best. But for the
occasional oddball, It's nice to have the option to change tunings. Of
course, with a clip on microphone, I'm not sure if 2 dobros really saves
time over just cranking on the tuner. But it's certainly faster than
changing a string if it should break during a set. So when I change strings
this week, Hazel will get the G6 tuning and Virginia will get G. and both
get to go to the gig and we're all happy. ('cept for poor Lassie. She needs
to get out to a jam real soon.)
