Boy am I chatty these days huh? (I'll go back to lurk soon Howard, I promise!)
Yep John, I was aware of Jeff Newman's "tempered tuning" charts. I'm also aware
of some of the newer steel guitars have "compensators" built into their
undercarriage to combat something they call "cabinet drop" or the flexing of the
cabinet. I always tuned everything right "on the mark" tho, and it pretty much
worked for me. I am a great believer in not fixing stuff that ain't broken. I
wonder what Speedy West, or Alvino Rey would've thought about compensators, or
tempered tunings? Speedy sure did more than ok with that old Bigsby. Some of
his playing can be found on You Tube.
Just my opinion but in most cases, none of this stuff really applies to the much
simpler dobro. Except for tunning those B strings just a bit flat, in G maj.
tuning, so they'll sound "sweet" when played with their other string friends.
I still maintain that a single well placed tasty note.....ahhh......how sweet it
is!
Of course your "twangs" are always better when they're in tune.....O;-) There's
times I wish I knew more about the techno side of music, and if I was starting
over....I'd sure devote more time to learning theory, but that time for me is
past, and I'm still enjoying dobro more than I know how to tell you.
