Subject:Re: [RESOGUIT-L] Tunings and re-tuning
Date:Monday, November 5, 2007  04:38:46 (+0000)
From:reso-man <reso-man @.......net>

I'm laughin here John,

I....had.....one.....of......those......pitch pipes! Mine had a plastic body,
white, with six little chrome tubes, with reeds in them, and was meant for
whatever (I still don't know) the notes are on a normally tuned Spanish guitar.
I think I remember using the "E" note, and tuning somehow from that point. My
first "real" tuner, is still hanging on the wall here and it's a Korg WT 10A. I
still use it from time to time here in my front room-office-studio-practice room.

I've seen Mike Auldridge use (at that point in time) a SABINE AX-2000 tuner, so
I got one. (If it's good enough for Mike, then it's SURELY good enough for me!)
Then I had the "old style" Intellitouch, and used those for awhile. I find I'm
really liking the "new" type Intellitouch, the little square one with the liquid
crystal "dial" display. Those things are wonderful.

Those of you who know me, know that I have more than one "working guitar" that I
use with our little regional bluegrass band www.pinehillramblers.com Call me
crazy, but I like to have the four guitars that I take to festivals or to a gig
all with their own individual "tools". I'm scared to show up to play at a jam
session or a gig, and find my picks are in another guitar's case.....yikes! So
every guitar that leaves my house, has it's own picks, bar, and that's where all
those tuners, acquired over a long period of time, come in.

Actually, I feel you should be able to tune (in most cases) by ear! I have a
Rob Ickes video course around here somewheres and Rob starts right out by showing
how he tunes without a tuner. I was so looking forward to going to Reso-Summit,
and again, those of you who know me, know I had to cancel due to the health
issues of a close family member....but I was looking forward to watching Rob tune
up. That and a whole LOT of other things......dang. But I mainly use a tuner as
a "double check" to make sure I'm A440 standard....except for those B strings.

Those old pioneering musicians tho, they sure "got it done", I still remember
the time I heard a vinyl album "Corn Pickin & Slick Sliding" by Jimmy Bryant & Speedy West. Then go check out Noel Boggs's version of "Alabama Bound" on
You Tube.....yikes!!! Of course this isn't resophonic, but I mention it to prove
my point about getting too involved in theory and forgetting to just let the
music OUT!!!

I just got a new turntable (it was my birthday) so now that I have acess to my
vinyl albums again, I think I'll go and put on that album that Mike Auldridge did
with Jeff Newman. Talk about the best of BOTH worlds!

Richie
