Subject:Re: [RESOGUIT-L] Tunings and re-tuning
Date:Monday, November 5, 2007  19:14:47 (-0800)
From:Richard DeNeve <richard_d13132 @.....com>

Get either the plain D or the wound 3rd G to the exact
note you want; tuned the rest of the guitar by
harmonics. I tune my G to my electronic tuner, or
from another band instrument whose tuning I trust, and
tune the rest of the guitar to it as follows (open G
tuning):

Chime the thin D at the 12 th fret and the 3rd (G) at
the 7th fret. Adjust the tuning peg for the D string
until the notes are the same and the "beats"
disappear.

Chime the 3rd (G) string again at the 7th fret and the
4th string (D) at the 5th fret, and adjust the D tuner
until the notes are the same. (Or, you could use the
12th fret chime on the first string and the 5th fret
chime on the 4th string.

Chime the 3rd string on the 12th fret and the 6th
string on the 5th fret to get your G strings in tune
by adjusting the tuner for the 6th string.

Chime the 2nd (B) string on the 7th fret and the 4th
(D) string on the 4th fret, and adjust the B tuner
until the notes match.

Chime the 2nd (B) string on the 12th fret and the 5th
(B) string on the 5th fret, and adjust the 5th string
tuner until the notes are the same.

(Alternatively, the B strings may be tuned by chiming
a B string on the 5th fret and matching it's note to
the chime on the 4th fret of the next lower G string.)

The B notes will be slightly flat from what you would
achieve on a tuner-tuned B, but the tuner "averages"
the B notes in various chords - the "tempering" of a
tempered scale - whereas we use a bar in a straight
line, so we want the B frequency that is more exact
for the G chord, or the relative "straight across"
chords at other positions.

(And, yes, I am aware that the B note when tuned from
the D string is very slightly different from the B you
get when tuning it from the G string.)

This will put the guitar in tune with itself. If it
started out way sharp or flat, change of down-pressure
on the cone may cause the reference G note to become
slightly off as you tune. In this case, retune the
reference G and make the minor adjustments to the
other strings as above.

Once you get the hang of it, you can fine tune the
guitar from your root string (here, G) in less than 10
seconds with these harmonics.

Good luck.
