Will Do Richie,
The first Sunday of every month, Woodland Meeting House hosts a Bluegrass
jam open to the public. Last time around ther were at least 10 ojnabs
stacked up against Virginia. Virginia held her own and didn't back down, but
she says it's be a lot more fun with Sadie, Sophie or Blackie to help keep
those 4&1/2 string tamborines in there place.
The following Saturday (December 8th is the next one) is when Dobro Dan and
the Innocent Bystanders get up on stage and entertain the folks. Yes, Steve,
if Mr. Twangs can make it all the way from Moo Hampshire, then the Cape is
an easy drive.
And then on the third Saturday, my friend Paul Dube hosts a Bluegrass "Open
Mic." Some of us here in New England prob'ly know Paul Dube by face if not
by name. He also hosts some slow jams at the Joe Val Bluegrass Festival in
February. Now this open mic is almost strictly Bluegrass (last month there
were about 2 or 3 cajun songs) but it's not one band after another. The
house band will kick things off, then after a while the mandolin player will
sit down and someone else will get up. Then the ojnab trades off and so on.
Last month there were 2 dobro players, but Gary only wanted to play flat
top, so by the end of the night, my fingers were just about wore out.
I figure it's rare to find a club so willing to cater to Bluegrass. The
owner has really sunk a lot of money into fixing up the place and she always
welcomes the Bluegrass crowd. I hope others in Southern New England who
haven't been there for a while will come check out at least one of these
events and help keep the doors open for us.
