Kathy:
I don't know whether these are still available, but I know that Tim
Scheerhorn had some Wechter-Scheerhorns with minor blems at ResoSummit that
were available at a deep discount, and Wechter Guitars also sells these
blems from their shop. So that's an option at the very low price end that
would still result in a very decent instrument. Another place to check on
the trade issue might be Buffalo Brothers in Carlsbad, CA -- they do huge
guitar business online as well as in their store, and they carry Beard
guitars as well as Beard Gold Tones and Wechter-Scheerhorns.
As for instruction, I would say if you are going to be in Nashville, arrange
for a private lesson with Michael Witcher -- he's a monster player and an
extremely good teacher, and pays particular attention to clean technique.
That lesson will keep you from having to un-learn a lot of bad habits
later. He also has an excellent instructional book and CD that I recommend
highly.
