Wanted to weigh in a little on this neck stuff. Everybody has made it clear
that it's real important to know the neck, and that knowing the Scales is
an important part of that...(and Lord knows I've bored you guys into
oblivion on that subject in the past). But one piece I haven't heard brought
up this time is how important it is to know the Scales in your head... that
is, to be able to recognize intervals. Then knowing where they live on the
neck is a lot more valuable.

For example, start with the root (1) of a major key, say G. Its pretty easy
to
recognize a third interval or a fifth... these are the notes that make up
the G chord...
but it's a little harder to find the 4. So if you were trying to play a
tune, you've
just played the root and the next note you need is the 4... if you don't
know
the note you're hearing in your head is the 4, knowing where the four is on
the
neck does you no good. So it would help to train yourself to recognize
_intervals_. It's much harder when you're in the middle of the scale and you
need to jump to some farther removed note... Take the Happy Birthday
example:

5 5 6 . 5 . 1 . 7 . . . 5 5 6 . 5 . 2 .1 . . . 5 5 5(octave) . 3 . 1 . 7 . 6
. . . 4 4 3 . 1 . 2 . 1 .

There are no real tricky intervals in this melody, and yet many have trouble
playing it without mistakes. Recognizing intervals _and_ knowing the Scales
enable one to play what he/she is hearing in his/her head...

Oh, by the way... I can't do this... it's a life-long quest to be able to do
it
(it's my musical Holy Grail). Mark O'Conner, Bela Fleck, Chris Thile, etc.
can do it.

How to learn to do it? Wish I knew... but I think you can just try playing
various interval and trying to identify them. Scale Pattern exercises
definitely
help.

As far as helpful, free info... Lots of great stuff at Poobs site:

Including links to my discussion of Scales (Scale Analyzer). If you want to
go
directly:

dobro only... works for most browsers (not so well for MS IE7):

http://www.resoguit.com/peterscales/ScaleAnalyzer/Home.htm

dobro and other instruments... works well for MS IE6... problems with
others:
