Hello Jay,Cal Baber here.I basically stay in deep undercover mode on the
list but do stick my head out on rare occasions.This is a pure opinion based
question because what you hear and like may not be what I or David or anyone
else likes.The Auldridge reso is to me the most consistently good sounding
reso being made today.I would say that the fact that Mike plays every one
that's made before it leaves Pauls shop has a lot to do with that and a
design that allows for some internal adjustments to be made.I've been there
and watched this process and they work very hard at getting what Mike wants
before its boxed up or it doesn't get boxed up.Even with that taking place
there are those that for what ever reason are just outright exceptional.That
being said the Model "E body reso's while being made from solid wood and
internally different are going to have the same sound differences from reso
to reso and there will be those that are exceptional.You said you are
looking at getting a Maple "E" body.There will be a similarity in all Maple
reso's but there will also be big differences from Maple reso to Maple reso
built by the same builder or different builders.This applies to every reso
made by every builder out there even Mr.Scheerhorn's and all woods be it
solid or ply.David and I know each other fairly well and I suffer from the
same sickness as he.We have spent quite a bit of time beating this subject
to death on the phone and a lot of money searching for the holy grail of
reso's or what He or I thought to be the holy grail anyway.My advise to you
would be take your time,look for build quality and "The" sound that really
grabs you.Get as many in your hands as you can and when you get the right
one you'll know it no matter what the name on the headstock is.There were
plenty of excellent reso's built before Scheerhorn and there will be a ton
more built after him,or any builder as far as that goes.Don't ever think
that because you may not end up with a Scheerhorn that your settling for
second best or that you missed out on owning "The" best.I've had three and
just sold my last one last week.For me it just wasn't the one I decided to
keep.It doesn't make me right or wrong nor the guys the have them and will
keep them forever.They were all good guitars just not for me.I kept a Beard
Auldridge Prototype,a Guernsey model 680,and a pristine model 37 Dobro I ran
across.I had the Beard up for sale and it didn't sell and I'm actually happy
it turned out that way.Good luck, hunting for one is a big part of the fun,
for me anyway.Let us know what you end up with.Cal
