If it helps:
I think you will find that any high end Reso is going to sound good,
although every high end reso will probably sound different, not
necessarily better.
I can tell you that when I first played a Beard MA, it was the dobro for me.
I have compared my Beard MA to many makes and models: Clinesmiths, a
number of Scheerhorns, the Model E, the Resophonic Model D Western and
none - NONE - ever sounded to my ear better than my MA and some
sounded a bit worse (again to my ear). I never heard one that I would
trade for my Beard MA.
That has been my experience. I have an MA 6 and an MA 8 string. I
can't imagine a better sounding instrument.
That said, the guy I bought my MA 6 from was selling it to purchase a
Clinesmith. I played his Clinesmith, and I thought he was insane. But
that was his choice. They were certainly very different instruments
and I guess he wanted that difference.
