Hello all,
I'm new here and want to introduce myself. My name is Jim Martin and I
live in Murfreesboro, TN. which is near Nashville, TN.
I've been trying to learn the reso for over ten years. I never stuck
with it long at a time. I would put it back in the closet and take it out again a
year or two later.
But recently I've stuck with it and have made great improvements. I
feel I'm finally gettin' the hang of it.
I can pick out melody lines now, learned the scales and can do a little
improvising. So I don't think I'll put it away again.
I have one problem that I would appreciate your help with. It's hard to
explain in writing but I'll try.
I use dunlop finger picks with a zooky thumbpick. The thumbpick is no
problem.
How long should the ends of the metal picks stick out from your finger
tips? How should they be shaped? Should the tips also be twisted at an angle so
they hit the strings flat faced? Mine seem to glance off at an angle which means
I can't feel the strings to well and lose contact with them.
Finger roles are giving me trouble now and I feel it's because I just
can't feel the strings that well. Because of that I miss the strings a lot.
I guess what I'm trying to say is I want to feel like I'm in contact
with the strings at all times and not just hit or miss luck.
I wish I had the confidence in my index and middle finger hitting the
right strings every time like I have in my thumb.
I've experimented with bending the pics at different angles with some
success.
I see another problem that might be the culprit. If I do fast finger
rolls I move my right hand off the bridge or anchor point without realizing it. I
feel this could cause the problem also.
I hope this makes sense. It's hard to explain in writing.
Can anyone give me some ideas that would help me?
Thanks!
Jim Martin
