Jim,
I am the farthest from an expert, but have my finger picks curved upward from
the strap part of the picks until the tips are almost at the ends of my
fingrnails. In other words, as far as they reach. This was per the instruction
of a well-known steel player I had a few lessons from 50 years ago. He is Mr.
Smooth on a steel and is still around making music.
BTW, Jim Heffernan says to rotate the picks slightly around the axis of your
fingers so they will hit the strings at more of a right angle.

finger tips? How should they be shaped? Should the tips also be twisted
at an angle so they hit the strings flat faced? Mine seem to glance off
at an angle which means I can't feel the strings to well and lose contact
with them.
