That is exactly how my dobro-playing career started....for better or worse!  ;-)

I don't know the answer to your pick question - I think a lot of it is
personal choice.  I will say that ProPik makes picks that already have
some angle in them, and that you are correct, it is better tone-wise
to hit the strings as straight-on as possible.  This may require
altering hand position, or pick adjustment.

Since you're near Nashville, I would highly recommend a lesson with
Mike Witcher who has recently moved there.  An occasional lesson with
him should generally help your progress, as well as correct any bad
habits you may be developing.
